Inspired by natural beauty, silk painting has been the catalyst for letting go of visual boundaries and my interest lies in spontaneous art making and the explorative use of mixed media.

The sensory experience highlights the importance of enabling artistic expression, made visible through the tangible nature of a medium. My love for making mosaics seems to underline the significance of touch.

I have been an artist, living and working in Wales since 1984, and enjoy sharing creative experiences with others.

I work with painted fabrics, print and thread to produce mainly wall-pieces, using hand and free machine embroidery but concentrating on the hand stitched mark. Inspired by light and the beautiful area where we live, my work seeks to move beyond perceived reality to give the viewer glimpses and windows of what might be. Wind of the spirit blows through all and informs all. At present I am studying for my MA Fine Art History at Aberystwyth.

I was born and raised in Criccieth, a small seaside resort in North Wales. After over forty years seafaring and living all over the world I have returned to my home town.
While on ocean voyages I have always painted, mostly seascapes, shorelines and pictures of the area where I grew up. I also take commsission for portrait which I undertake from photos/sittings. I am self taught and have been slowly developing my own style. I create bright, colourful scenes and stylistic figures.

My Great Uncle, the late William Cadwalader, was a well known local artist and I have recently bought and refurbrished his studio which was built by my Grandfather around 1930.

You can visit the studio and see my paintings on display. Just phone beforehand or knock on the door.

Detailed paintings, executed in gouache and watercolour, portray the play of light on water, on rocks, and sparkling through trees. Valerie’s scenes are typically Welsh, tending to favour the mood rather than a particular place. All her work is solitary, restful and contemplative. Valerie exhibits, works to commission and is available to tutor groups by invitation.
